Dos and don’ts after breast augmentation

After your breast augmentation surgery is completed and you are cleared to go home, you will receive postoperative care instructions to follow. Everyone’s recovery process is different. To help you have an idea of what to expect, we’ve prepared this list of dos and don’ts after breast augmentation surgery.

  1. Do get lots of rest. Avoid pushing yourself too hard; make sure to get plenty of sleep each night to let your body get back to normal.
  2. Do lie on your back. Sleep on your back with a pillow propped underneath your upper back to help bring blood flow to the area. Or, if you find it more comfortable, you can sleep in a recliner or rent one made specifically for recovery.
  3. Do eat well. Help your body recover fully by eating a diet full of lean protein, vegetables, fruit, and whole grains.
  4. Do be patient — know that there will be swelling and it will take several months for you to be fully healed.
  5. Do take at least a week off from your obligations. like work, school
  6. Don’t wear bras with underwires. Underwire bras may irritate the incisions and cause a rash.
  7. Don’t do any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. For at least the first 4-6 weeks, take it easy on any intense physical activity.
  8. Don’t swim or soak in the bath. You don’t want to expose the surgical site to bacteria which may be present in a swimming pool or bathtub.
  9. Don’t smoke. Avoid smoking in the weeks before and after your surgery so your body can fully heal.
  10. Don’t change your wardrobe right away. It can take 3 months for your breasts to settle into place.

The excitement of anticipated results shouldn’t stop you from following these instructions. You may want an extra pair of hands to assist with household chores during this time.
