Which Is the Best Injectable for Me?

The Aging Process

As we age, we lose collagen, the glue that holds our skin together and keeps it looking plump. After age 20, we lose 1% of our collagen every year. This is when the lines in our faces start to appear more prominent.

Why Injectables?

To fight the natural effects of aging, many people are choosing injectables. It is cheaper than going under the knife and can produce some truly amazing results. Injectables have become popular in the last couple of years, and for good reason.

In fact, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has witnessed a 40.6% increase in the number of injectables given in the last 5 years. There are many benefits of getting injectables including a shorter recovery time, near-instant results, and lower cost compared to surgical procedures. Not to mention, if you are not satisfied with your results, they are reversible.

Types of Injectables

You are considering getting an injectable, but first, you need to figure out what your aesthetic goals are. What injectable you will need will depend on what part of your face or body you want to improve. Injectables are highly customizable to the individual’s desired results. Contrary to popular opinion, injectables aren’t just for smoothing wrinkles. They can also help you bring out the natural features of your face by giving you fuller lips or raising your cheekbones.

There are two main types of injectables that we will focus on which are neuromodulators (aka Botox) and dermal fillers. For some patients, a combination of injectables might be suitable for complete facial rejuvenation.

Neuromodulators. Neuromodulators work by weakening and paralyzing muscles in the face. Botox® is one of the most well-known injectables; however, there are other options such as Jeuveau®, Xeomin®, and Dysport®. Neuromodulators are one of the most popular and easy treatments for patients. They deliver noticeable results relatively quickly and are a good place to start if you want to eliminate some of the facial wrinkles on your forehead or around your mouth. They tend to be the most popular type of treatment because they are relatively easy for patients and deliver noticeable results.

Dermal Fillers. Dermal fillers are used below the skin’s surface to add volume to areas of the face such as the lips or under the eyes. There are many dermal filler options including Restylane®, Versa, Radiesse and Juvederm®. One of the most popular kinds of dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid which hydrates the skin and increases its resilience.

What to Expect

The procedure itself only lasts about five to thirty minutes per area. Pain is typically minimal with patients reporting that it feels like getting your blood drawn. You can expect a relatively short recovery time of one to two days. You should be able to return to your normal activities immediately after your treatment in most cases.
